Your Parish
St. Martin is thriving, with a strong community spirit and a real pride in our environment and public amenities. I was delighted to be instrumental in delivering the new playground on the Village Green, without recourse to Parish funding. Our design process has become a catalyst and template for the rest of the Island. I took notice of the Youth Assembly’s Right to Play strategy that prioritises the needs and aspirations of young people and play for all ages, and fundraised and installed the Viking Swing near to the Natural Playscape on the Village Green.
Securing the States loan for the refurbishment of La Vielle École was one of my first tasks in the States Assembly. It has been a resounding success; delivering a supermarket, a Vets, and a GP Surgery and Pharmacy, all in the very heart of our Parish. I have also worked with the Parish Procureurs to ensure that the Parish buildings are well maintained and cared for.
In this vein we have secured planning permission for the Rectory Barn and have successfully started fund raising towards our target of £800,000. I am determined that during my next term of office we will complete the refurbishment of the Rectory Barn and deliver a much-needed new community facility.
Over the next few months, we should receive a draft design code for Gorey Pier and the immediate surroundings. This should give me the foundations for seeking tangible improvements to the public realm so that Gorey continues to remain a thriving destination for both locals and visitors alike.
We have also introduced kerbside recycling, secured our long-awaited speed review, relaunched our Community Support Volunteer Group, submitted plans for an extension to the Cemetery and undertaken a phased refurbishment of the Public Hall. In addition, I will continue to work with and support St Martin’s Housing Association to deliver viable proposals for affordable homes and right-sizing. I remain committed to safeguarding the beauty and natural environment of St Martin and if elected I will remain vigilant in terms of future planning applications. I will also continue to implement practical enhancements such as the introduction of conservation grazing for the wetland area and maintaining our cemeteries to a high standard.
I am proud to support the Honorary Police for the vital work which they carry out for our community. We are fortunate to have a wonderful parish team, and I am extremely grateful to all who freely give up their time as members of the municipality, the parish Churches, as well as those involved in the Maufant Youth Project, the Gorey Fete & Bonfire Committee and Jumelage. All are vitally important parts of Parish life.
